The Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation Museum

The Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation Museum

Description

The Tsarouchis legacy

Yannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989) was one of the most influential Greek artists of his generation, celebrated for blending traditional Greek motifs with contemporary European influences. His diverse body of work spanned more than seven decades and included painting and stage design. His signature themes included sailors, mythological figures and representations of everyday people, rendered with vivid colours and an underlying nostalgia for Greek tradition.

In 1965, he built his home and studio in the northern Athens suburb of Marousi and, in 1981, he established the Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation, converting the first floor and loft into exhibition spaces. He donated his home, 5,000 of his works and his extensive archive to the Foundation.

He was involved in organising and curating the exhibitions at The Marousi Museum – as he called it – until his death in 1989. In all, the Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation has hosted more than 20 thematic exhibitions, attracting thousands of visitors from around the world.

In the museum

Visitors today have the opportunity to view highlights from Tsarouchis' photographic archive and unpublished archive material, as well as painting research, stage sets, correspondence and elements of his home.

The museum gives an insight into Tsarouchis’ artistic process and influences and how he interpreted Greek motifs and lifestyles through his art. His creative process is revealed through sketches and preliminary studies.

To ensure a faithful representation of the way he worked - including his use of light and shadow, and with works pinned to fabric-covered walls and placed on the floor - it wouldn't be possible to use the actual artworks. So full-scale replicas are displayed alongside a wealth of photographs of his compositional process and personal objects left in their original positions. The aim is to allow visitors to experience how Yannis Tsarouchis lived and worked in his Marousi home. As part of the exhibition, the Foundation also organises educational programs and activities for parents and children.
